A Magnificent And One Of A Kind Large Antique French Gilded Wood Carving, 1700's

This is an absolutely magnificent and one of a kind antique French gilded wood carving that dates from the 18th century. The carving was once the crowning part of a grand interior pediment that adorned the entrance of a chateau in the South of France. The carving is in the shape of a stunning clam shell with an acanthus leaf. Once it was fully gilded. Through its impressive age some of the gilding has flaked away creating in the process a mesmerising timeworn patina of exceptional beauty and allure. This is a glorious ancient treasure that measures about 51 x 34 x 24 cm or approximately 20 x 13.3 x 9.4 inches,. It could be used in so many decorative ways today, for example as a bowl for fruits or other decorative items such as white corals, sea shells, and even Christmas decorations. It could also be placed upright free standing on a shelf if desired. It is exactly as I discovered it on my recent thrip to France in November 2023.
