A Precious And Extremely Rare Antique French Devotional Shrine, 1700's
This is a precious and extremely rare antique French devotional shrine that dates from the 18th century. Discovered recently in the South of France, this gorgeous treasure consists of a hand carved and gilded frame with a glass front that holds within a magnificent figure of the Christ as a child. The head is created from wax. The statue is adorned with a captivating robe and a crown made of silk, bullion trims and tiny pearls. He also wears a necklace with a silver heart. The shrine measures about 30 x 22 x 8.5 cm or approximately 11.8 x 8.6 x 3.3 inches and it is in lovely antique condition considering its impressive age. Attached to its back is a paper with some writing on it, dating 1749, perhaps a day it was gifted to a loved one. This treasure is exactly as I discovered it with some signs of ageing that in my opinion only brings forth its true beauty and timeworn splendour today.
